How to Use iBooks

iBooks is becoming an increasingly popular medium for reading on the iPad. Learn how to use the intuitive, native iPad to get the most out of your e-reader experience.

Basic Controls in iBooks on iPad

So first, let's talk about the basic controls. When you're inside iBooks, you can look for the Fonts button. You can make the size bigger or smaller, you can select from a series of different fonts. There are several different modes: sepia, normal, and there's even a night mode so you can reverse the text for easier reading under darkened conditions. There's also a full screen view that removes most of the buttons from pages and just gives you a cleaner page view.
Also on the fonts screen, you can control the brightness. Now if you darken it, some say that can create a more natural, paper-like reading experience. If you brighten it, then it's more visible in bright conditions like sunlight.

Navigating Through a Book and Looking Up Words in iBooks

Now let's take a look at the Table of Contents. You can just press the button here and you'll get a list of chapters, just like a regular book. You can just tap that here and you'll go right to your desired chapter. You can also bring up the little magnifying glass icon to bring up the search function and search for text anywhere in the book.

Another handy feature is being able to use bookmarks. You can do that by pressing this little ribbon button right here. You can turn it off by clicking again. You don't have to be on the page to see the bookmark. You can also see it on the Table of Contents page. If you click the Bookmarks tab, you can see that bookmark - or multiple bookmarks - and you can press that and go directly there like you would go to a regular chapter stop.

Now if you double tap a word, you can bring up a definition - just bring up the button that says define. In the same menu, you can also highlight a word in different colors, and you can look up that highlight or note in the Table of Contents function.

And like most e-book readers, iBooks is very easy to navigate to read from page to page. Just slide your finger, and you go to the next page. You can also go backwards. This replicates a natural reading experience.

Changing the General Default View of iBooks

Now this is the general default view of iBooks. You can see a series of virtual bookshelves. You can arrange books in different collections. You can simply click the collections button and you can see a list of collections that you've put together. All you need to do is click Edit to move the books around. You can also delete books this way, or again, move books to different collections.

How to Buy and Add Books in iBookstore

Now the simplest way to add books to iBooks is to click the store button. When you click that store button, you'll be taken straight to the iBookstore, where you can search through different books and add them directly to your collection. You can search the authors and buy them right on the spot. Also, you can download samples of books, and it'll give you 10-30 pages of the book. You can browse through that book for free, and then you can decide to buy it later.
iBooks also supports the PDF and ePub format. That means you can read books from, say, the Nook bookstore, right in iBooks.
