How to Network a Printer

I will talk to you about how to network a printer. 

Types of Printers

I'm going to briefly mention the three most common types of printers. We're all familiar with USB printers, they have a USB connecting wire; Ethernet, which uses the network wire, which usually goes into your router; and then wireless printers.  Basically, the Ethernet and the Wi-Fi printers kind of fall into the same category - the only real difference between them is one has a cable, which is the Ethernet. The Wi-Fi does not, but they're both network printers.

Networking a Printer

Now the truth is, any printer can become a network printer. You can even network and share a USB printer. But when you do share a USB printer, let's say you have a computer, a Windows PC with a printer and you want other people to be able to access the printer, that machine will need to be on 24 hours a day, in order for the printing capabilities to work. 

Now most printers can work on the Mac operating system, the Windows operating system, it's just a matter of locating the proper driver, which is a software utility, to install on either the Windows box or the Mac box.

Wi-Fi and network printers I actually like more than USB printers, because they don't require a machine to actually host the printing, and the printing can be more centrally located. So let's say, for example, you want to buy a wireless printer. Now you can plug this wireless printer into a wall outlet. There's no need for it to be sitting on a desk or next to a computer or saying "let me make sure that computer is on." You can also put the wireless printer wherever you want, as long as it has signal with the wireless router.
