How to Fix a Paper Jam

We've all been there: the paper goes in but doesn't come out. There are many reasons why paper might get jammed in a printer. But don't worry, in most cases the solution is pretty simple.

The trick to fixing a paper jam is be firm but gentle. Start by pulling the paper out the opposite direction it went in. Then open the door to the printer and see if there is anything obstructing the wheels. Gently remove anything that you see, if you can, but be care not to break any of the moving parts. In some printers, there may be hot points inside. If the ink cartridges are in the way, try turning the printer off and on again. After you've removed the jam, you'll have to re-send you print job from your computer.

When paper gets jammed inside your printer, follow these steps to get the printer working again. First, if the paper is sticking out from the auto-sheet feeder or the paper output tray, slowly and gently pull it out.

If it tears and leaves a piece inside, push up the document cover and take out the remaining piece. Be careful not to touch any of the components inside the machine, since they could be hot.

If you’re not able to get the paper out, close the cover and turn the printer off. When you turn it back on it will automatically eject (you’ll have to start your print job again).
